Artemis Fowl der Zweite ist elegant gekleidet, besitzt die noble Blässe eines Adligen, und sein Intelligenzquotient ist weit über dem Normalen. Seine Gegner zittern bei der Nennung seines Namens oder bei Sicht seines hünenhaften Leibwächters namens Butler. Dabei ist Artemis Fowl erst zwölf Jahre alt -- und zugleich das größte Verbrecherhirn diesseits des Äquators. Sein Plan, seiner Familie wieder zu ihrem alten Glanz zu verhelfen, ist ebenso verwegen wie genial: die Entführung eines Fabelwesens aus der Unterwelt im Austausch gegen Gold, unendlich viel Gold. Durch einen Trick gelangt Artemis an das sagenhafte Buch der Elfen, und mittels modernster Computertechnologie gelingt es ihm, das Buch zu übersetzen. Jetzt weiß er, wo und wie er eine Elfe gefangen nehmen kann. Und tatsächlich, die Elfe Holly Short geht ihm in die Falle. Aber Holly hat so gar nichts mit dem herkömmlichen Elfenbild gemein: Sie ist Mitglied einer im Untergrund operierenden Elitepolizeitruppe, die sich durchaus wehren kann -- sei es mit Magie oder mit ihrer nuklearbetriebenen Pistole, die drei Einstellungen hat: "angeschmort, gut durch und komplett verkohlt". Die Pläne des sonst so selbstsicheren Jungen geraten langsam aber sicher ins Wanken, als sich Hollys Polizeikollegen, diverse Kobolde und ein Amok laufender Troll an seine Fersen heften. Vorsicht -- Artemis Fowl ist alles andere als Harry Potter 5: Colfers Elfen sind durchsetzungsfähige, hochgerüstete Wesen, die unter der Erde leben und nicht ohne Grund bisher vor Menschaugen verborgen waren, sei es durch den Einsatz der etwas angestaubten Magie oder technischer Ausrüstung, die jemand wie Daniel Düsentrieb oder James Bonds Waffenausstatter "Q" erfunden haben könnte. Mit Artemis hat Colfer einen mehr als sympathischen Antiheld geschaffen, dem man beinah wünscht, dass er mit seinem Vorhaben durchkommt.
